4 Lower-Back Stretches for Wheelchair Users
Wheelchair users are no strangers to the soreness can happen in the lower back. However, with a few modified yoga positions, you can help alleviate some of the worst symptoms. Since January is all about resolving to better yourself, Lift and Transfer Specialists would like to share a few of these stretches with you:
The Twist and Shout!
Well, maybe not the shouting part (unless it really hurts). What you want to do is grab your right knee with your left hand and put your right hand behind as far as you can. Then, switch it up and do the same for the left side. Hold the positions for at least 10 seconds each time you do it.
The Faint
Lean forward as far as you can in your wheelchair and place your head between your knees. This is often a pose people will do when they feel dizzy, but it’s also a great way to take some pressure off the lower back. If you feel like you’re going to fall out of your chair, find something to hook your arms on. This will allow you to lean even further. If hooking your hands onto something is physically difficult for you, have a helper hold your hands as you lean forward.
The Pull
For this, you want to lay on your back on a bed or sofa, with your legs dangling off the end. Brace your upper body. Then, have a helper pulls your ankles downward. The goal with this is to lengthen your back. This should help you feel quite a bit of relief.
The Modest Lady
Pick one leg up and cross it over the other. While it may look like you’re trying to pose as a modest lady, it’s a very effective position to relieve back pain for wheelchair users. It can relieve some of the pressure that’s being placed on the lower back. Again, if you’re not physically capable of picking up your own legs, have a helper move them for you.
